This is a collective record of the trials and tribulations of two 20-somethings attempting to operate like functional adults.
I can’t promise we won’t get idealistic sometimes. I’m a sucker for eco-friendly and Alex is love with “made in the USA”. In general though, we hope this blog serves as a useful if not interesting catalog of DIY projects, recipes, ideas and other domestic nonsense.
This is a collective record of the trials and tribulations of two 20-somethings attempting to operate like functional adults.
About the Authors:
--Fleeing a shitty new landlord and an even shittier roommate, our intrepid homesteaders left their meager second-floor apartment for a little house of their very own complete with basement, garden, and the whole she-bang. --
So what happens you mix a whiskey swilling, gun-toting Iraq veteran from South Jersey with a vocally feminist, free-range/organic idealist fresh out of the woods?
Apparently it’s a match made in heaven. Domestically
speaking, at least.
I originally met Alex when I answered his craigslist ad for
a cheap roommate. “I appreciate cheap,” I thought. Now, how to convince him
that cheap AND sustainable was just as good? My indoctrination was
slow and subtle. “We don’t need to buy any dishwasher or laundry detergent-we
can just make it!” or “Why don’t we just roast our own coffee?” and a good deal of “Here,
eat this.” Sooner or later I realized that under that his stubbornly patriotic,
irrationally blue-collar exterior Alex was actually a pretty good partner in domestic crime. And handy, too.
We both love old stuff – me for the style and Alex for the sentimentality.
I sometimes joke that what we’re actually creating is a retirement home for old
appliances. Alex sustains himself on stubbornness and frugality and I operate
on sustainable living and the bitter resistance of consumerism. Did I mention we're awkward as f*ck?
So...uh...please enjoy!
